Music To Drink To

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Many people have their preferences in music just as they have their preferences in wine. When you get home after a long day at work, you may want to kick back with a glass of wine and put on some tunes. But can music help enhance the taste of your wine?

Interestingly enough, a study by Heriot Watt University in Britain found that people believe there is a difference in taste when certain music is played. In fact, 60% of people believed the taste changed when music came into the picture.

The sounds in the music somehow seemed to echo the flavors and tastes in the wine. Cabernet Sauvignon was most affected by “powerful and heavy” music whereas a bottle of Chardonnay tasted better with music that was “zingy and refreshing.”

Wondering what to try (music-wise) the next time you sit down with a glass of wine? How about “Live and Let Die” by Paul McCartney and Wings with Cabernet Sauvignon, “What’s Love Got To Do With It” by Tina Turner for Chardonnay, “Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay” by Otis Redding with some Merlot, or “Orinoco Flow” by Enya with Syrah.

So the next time you see a bottle of wine, don’t be too surprised to see the label include a few musical recommendations as well!

Unexpected Wine Gift Items

Monday, December 26th, 2011

Enjoying a glass of wine is always excellent. But have you ever thought about taking your love of wine to the next level? Or perhaps you know someone who is a wine connoisseur. Maybe they would like a fun wine-related gift. Here are a few unexpected wine items that can be fun to see as a stocking stuffer or an outright gift this holiday season if you haven’t yet celebrated all your Christmas get-togethers.

The wine glass yolk. It does look a little odd at first, but it can be handy if you have nowhere to set your wine at the party and need both your hands to hold food or deliver plates to guests. It’s cheap and unique and can be a surprising hit during the holiday season. New Year’s Eve is coming up quickly! Maybe you need an idea for a host or hostess gift.

A cork bulletin board can be a fun reminder – in more ways than one! Stick important notes or business cards to this cork board – made of wine corks! Some come pre-made while others allow you the chance to create your own. It can be a fun and interesting way to display all your wine corks.

A wine candle chimney set gives you a unique candle to burn. It looks as though the candle uses wine itself as the fuel, but instead it’s just borrowing the bottle. It makes for a great way to reuse old bottles for a brand new look.

The Price of Dining Out

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

When you dine out, you may decide to have a glass of wine with your food. After picking up the wine list, you may discover that some of the prices aren’t the same as what you might pay in a store. A bottle or even a glass may seem rather expensive. But before you worry about wine pricing, consider how much you might pay for a slice of cake or even a cup of coffee at that same restaurant compared to what you might pay in a store.

Likewise, restaurants have different philosophies when it comes to handling wine in their establishment. There are various factors included when they price wine, such as glassware expenses, wait staff, kitchen staff, inventory carrying costs, and more. Profit structures are very different between the retail world and a restaurant setting. In fact, sometimes they structure it so even when expensive bottles of wine are listed, customers can enjoy them at more affordable prices.

If you don’t like the prices at one establishment, complaining is not likely to lead to any changes. Instead, choose to visit a different restaurant that has wines you like at prices you agree with, or simply purchase your wine from a store and enjoy it outside of a restaurant setting.
